Topic:  Canada Demoparty
* Posted by thom Tuesday 8 June 2004 - 20:20
As most people know, I've been wanting to run a demoparty in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for some time. But I've also been a bit quiet on the subject during the past few months. This is because I spent the last year doing a "condensed" electronics course and was unsure where I'd end up working.

As it turns out, I'm no longer going to be situated in Edmonton: My new job is in Lloydminster.

So the question is, would anyone in North America actually travel to Lloydminster for a demoparty? If so, I'd still be willing to organize something for 2005.

(For the uniformed, Lloydminster is ~300 km East of Edmonton, right on the Alberta/Saskatchewan border. Pop. 20 000)

So is the only way to get there by driving?

Edmonton was more of a straight shot since I could fly there, so if there was a party going on there, I would go.

I'm not sure about Lloydminster.

There are four Greyhound bus depatures from Deadmonton to Lloydminster everyday, so plane & bus is an option. But otherwise, it's not too convenient for airborne sceners...

Over there in Europe (I heard) they go sometimes to a party by flying to a near located airport and taking a bus (sometimes completely filled with sceners) to the location.

are remotecontribs allowed? :D

Of course not! But if nobody wants to visit Lloydminster, I figure maybe I'll do some sort of online compo. Kind of a lame-o alternative, but it's an option.

That may well be true, but seeing as I wasn't born in Canada it doesn't apply to my DNA structure.

Aren't there a few others also situated near Edmonton that could help organize something closer to the big city that you could still be involved in? It certainly would be easier for those flying in.

Wow, this thread reared it's ugly head once again.

Yes, it's still very much a goal of mine to organize a demoparty. Unfortunately, I'll probably be living in Lloyd for another two years.

For those who met me at Breakpoint '05, you've already heard stories about Lloydminster. But for the benefit of everyone else, this is definitely *NOT* the place for a party.

But rest assured, it will happen. Oh yes, it will happen. Even if it's the last thing I ever do...

i hate to be a sourpuss, but people need to pick cities for north american demoparies that are a little less.. middle of nowhere. parties aside, utah and alberta are *not* good locations to attract a wide range of visitors. the scene would pick up faster in regions more.. metropolitan. where people can visit each other and such.

it might work for burning man, but not for computers.

now someone organize already that party in las vegas so me and okkie could join the fun.

It's not a question of "picking" cities, it's a question of who is willing to organize a party. So far that only means Legalize, and because he lives in Salt Lake City, that's where the party is located. Simple really...

maybe so. just stating the fact that if there was a party in a big, easily accessible city you would attract not only more attenders from the north america but also from europe. let it be new york, chicago, san francisco, las vegas, toronto...

I don't see how any of those cities are more/less accessible than SLC. Everyone is just a plane flight away.

* Posted by melw Friday 12 August 2005 - 9:52
ok, let me re-phrase: not just accessible but more attractive.
