Topic:  torrents for selected subdirs?
* Posted by legalize Wednesday 28 September 2005 - 5:26
Can scene.org and its relay servers host a bittorrent of selected directories?

For instance, torrents for each of the demovibes CD directories, the Halcyon DVD directory, the demoshow CD directories, and even individual party releases like assembly2005 and so-on. I think its reasonable to say that a torrent for a party would be served for a certain period from the time when the party results are uploaded and stable (otherwise you have to keep making a new torrent for the trickle-in files).

I suppose this would require scene.org to run a tracker web server. However, I think there are advantages for distributing large collections like a new demovibes CD. With the global scene.org archive servers participating in bittorrent, releasing should be very effective.

Running a tracker is a relatively taxing affair.

actually i heard of another project starting a scene tracker "soon".

would be cool to have as an alternative to the ftps to get demoscene files, in case we ever get down for whatever reason. or we simply need to take the file offline for whatever moronic legal reason.

dunno about complete dirs torrent overall usefullness.. i wouldnt use it, dunno how many other ppl would.. maybe it would be used, left to be decided if its worth the hassle. jeffry did some tests with the technology already atleast i believe.

It could work for big parties like Breakpoint and Assembly. Someone wants all amiga demos or all pc 64k intros and therefor starts to download a torrent of that compo. But a torrent for a complete party or even more? I'm with ps at that topic.

Take a look at the directories that I suggested: they are all directories that contain large multi-part archives of a single ISO file or DVD/CD image. It makes total sense to have a bittorrent distribution of such content. The party dirs was a parenthetical possibility commented on last in the list and is not the main thrust of the suggestion.
