Topic:  aussies abroad, & making 'the big trip'
* Posted by Gaia Thursday 20 April 2006 - 12:59
Hello world,

At the moment, it feels that our Aussie scene is deceptive (or rather, the collation of .au sceners - perhaps 'scene' at this point is a bit obtuse).

However, it does exist in various little bits of gold.. with a few good minded people - and some really hard workers as well.

some of us (the fortunate, brave, and alcloholic) make the big overseas adventure - either heading to europe purely in search of partys; or perhaps simply searching for some piece of mind.. in some other culture that is a little more random and perhaps techy.

Do people feel, that 'going abroad' has become more of a trend in last few years? Who anyone done the trek? How did it feel? Anyone living overseas currently?
I'll be at ASM 06 etc..

Well, maybe we'll have to do something about it...

I know this thread is kind of old, but i "did" make the big trip to Breakpoint 2007 because i didn't actually think there was an Australian scene at all!! In some ways, i think many of us on here should have been born in Europe due to our affinity with the Demo Scene. But instead, we need to make the costly trip which for most of us is once in a lifetime because as you have already stated.. its EXPENSIVE !!!!...

Yeah. a few of us from Affinity are planning to go to Breakpoint 07.. Just the cost involved :(

Good call HW. The Breakpoint party looks awesome - especially being pure-demoscene. I've wanted to go for years, especially since Federation Against Nature started releasing their realtime raytracing prods.

Your right about the cost though. It's costing myself & gaiaSword around AU $4500 each (inc cheap accom, insurance & food) to get to ASM '06, Evoke & Scene Event... then Scene Event got cancelled after we'd already booked the flights to Denmark. But we both figure you've got to do it at least once in life; especially considering the inspiration we've both drawn from the scene. All I can say is "go for it" (if you can) although we'll confirm that with you when we are back from our adventure!

I'd suggest looking at getting yourself a Working Holiday Visa and relocating to the UK for 2 years and at least you'll only be a few $100 for a plane ticket to an ASM or something as well as having a ball living somewhere different.

now that is a good idea Yannis.. still tracking?

ctrix: $4500 is a lot of money these days still, and then that would be the minimun needed (then again it depends if you stay with family :) - as that tends to make it a bit cheaper). the biggest thrill for me would be to enter the demo comp at BP07, and see our stuff shown live. and it would be great to present a 100% done australian demo (all aussie code/music/gfx). it just needs to get a "reasonable" placement and all would be good. but it is a expensive proposal.

Heavyweight: Yeah, $4.5k was a lot of money - it cost me my PC upgrade this year. But the trip was certainly worth it. Walking into Hartwell arena for the first time and seeing ASM in full swing is a humbling experience! As was chilling out in Germany and Denmark (both had totally different but awesome vibes). If you are going in a group, the backpacker style bunk rooms are a good deal to share. Biggest cost is getting there - I'd do it again though! (and probably will)

Yannis: Yep. Ryan air and some of the others offer flights for $100ish and you can stay in places like the University flats (during holidays) for $35ish a night (between two) including fridge / oven / buffet breakfast. And security is really good so you can leave a laptop without worrying about it.

(back to the website for now. Gowd I hate formatting in HTML!!)
