   INFO:
   -- -- - -------------------------------------------------------------------

The Amiga computer was launched in 1985 as an advanced personal and gaming
computer. Many hobbyist computer programmers, graphic artists, and musicians
took hold of this platform and created spectacular programs to show off
their talent and the Amiga's capabilities. Over the past several decades,
many talented individuals created amazing works of art unseen and unknown
to world outside the small Amiga computer and demo scene. The Amiga only
survived for a decade, but these demonstrations will live on forever.

"MindCandy Volume 2: Amiga Demos" was a DVD project by Hornet, Fusecon, and
Blue 7 Media, started in 2003 and completed in late 2006. Free preview
discs were given away at the Assembly 2005 demoparty, featuring an Amiga
Workbench-style menu (you can still get the preview .ISO, search for
"mindcandy" at www.scene.org). The final DVD was officially released on
   January 16th, 2007.

Over five years later, as of May 1st, 2012, MC2 has officially sold out!
To celebrate the occasion, we are releasing both the PAL and NTSC versions
under a Creative Commons license. Details of the license are below.

This archive contains the same full dual-layer .ISO image that the retail
disc contained, including the layer break in the right place. Also included
are the DVD case cover, the full booklet, and even the images we used for
our stickers. So if you missed your chance to experience MC2, fret no more!
We've also thrown in some reviews we got from Amiga Power and c't magazine.

We had to capture RGB video in as good quality as possible (the video had to
come directly from the Amiga RGB port) using 2004-era technology on a small
budget, including an uncompressed workflow to avoid any generational
artifacts. The NTSC video is 720x480 @ 29.97i (interlaced) while PAL is
720x576 @ 25i (both in 4:3 aspect ratio). MC2 was mastered for CRT tube
televisions, but should still look great on any output device.

MindCandy Volume 2 was a very successful release, having sold 3000 copies
(1000 NTSC and 2000 PAL). The sales of MC2 provided the seed money to make
MindCandy Volume 3, our Blu-ray high-def follow-up to our first PC volume,
so the project gave back to the scene community not once but twice.
MindCandy Volume 3 is still available - visit http://www.mindcandydvd.com/3
   to get your copy!

We hope you enjoy MindCandy Volume 2 as much as we enjoyed making it.

   -=[NTSC version-specific notes]=-

All of the source material came from European Amiga demos, which are in the
PAL video standard of 50 frames per second. This material was used to
create the NTSC version using a mixture of motion compensation and editing,
with little or no ghosting or motion artifacts, achieving better results
than expensive dedicated hardware (for North American 'sceners, the NTSC
release of MC2 is the only way to view Amiga demos as they were intended
without actually owning European PAL Amiga hardware).

If you live in North America and own home theater gear that cannot play PAL
discs at 50Hz, please use the NTSC version. Attempting to play the PAL
version may result in annoying skipping or judder during sections with
smooth motion, ruining the "full framerate" effect that demoscene demos are
   known for.

While the NTSC conversion was of extremely high quality, it differs from the
source material in both resolution and framerate enough that it should not
be used as a historically-accurate reference. For true historical accuracy,
   please reference the PAL version.

                                                             SPECIAL FEATURES:
   -- -- - -------------------------------------------------------------------

   Audio commentary
Each demo has an audio track discussing the demo, from either the original
demo creators, other fans and experts, or ourselves.

   Subtitles
By popular demand from our non-native-English-speaking friends, the
commentary is accompanied by subtitles, in no fewer than three
   languages: English, French, and German.

Original and 5.1 channel Dolby Digital soundtracks
All demos feature both the original stereo soundtrack, captured straight
from Amiga hardware, and a surround sound track, rebuilt from the audio
samples contained within the demo music files.

   12-page full color booklet
Once again the package contains a large booklet, with info on every demo,
along with a timeline of Amiga demos, credits, and various other tidbits of
information. We have included the booklet in this release as a PDF.

   Production notes
Volume 2's production notes go beyond the first, with a full audio track,
photos, and in-progress screenshots and animations. No enthusiast
(read: geek ;) ) stone is left unturned, as we share just how much a pain
   reviving old hardware can be.

   New playback modes
For fun, we added two new playback modes - shuffle, which plays demos
back randomly - every time you put in the disc - and jukebox, which allows
you to play up to a dozen demos in the order you want. Our DVD authoring
wizard Jeremy managed to use fractional DVD hardware registers, the hardware
Random register, and crazy scripting skills to bring the first intelligent
random shuffle on any DVD. Random mode has a random starting point, doesn't
follow a preset pattern, and will not repeat any of the last 12 demos
   played, on any DVD player!

   DEMOGRAPHICS: PORTRAIT OF A PARTY
A 19-minute film, created exclusively for MindCandy Volume 2: Amiga Demos
   by Blue7 Media

The "demo party" has deep roots in the underground realm of home computing.
First, kids gathered in school gyms and empty halls to trade copies of the
latest games. They presented themselves as "cracker" groups and put little
intros in front of the games on the disks they spread.. until the police
showed up! Those who took the intro making more seriously (as well as
the law!) continued meeting in larger halls with like-minded chums, now
competing to see who can get the best code, music, and graphics out of a
computer. Almost as weird and wacky as the partygoers themselves were all
the tweaked and customized Commodores, Ataris, and PCs brought together.
In the days before LAN, floppy disks were swapped from machine to
machine.. and hurled into the air, in more extravagant outdoor competitions.

In 2003, shortly after the release of MindCandy Volume 1, the crew embarked
on a trip from America to Germany, to witness one of the largest and last
of the traditional demoparties - no gaming, no outside network. This new
event was called Breakpoint, a successor to the wildly successful Mekka
& Symposium which united countries and computers into one informal melting
pot of drinking, dancing, and freestyle computing. Not knowing quite what
to say, the crew just turned on their cameras and microphones and let the
   experience document itself.

   PRODUCTION TEAM:
   -------------------------------------------------------------------- -- -
   Jim Leonard (Trixter)
Jim "Trixter" Leonard enjoys a life of mundane nerditude, occasionally
punctuated by periods in which a few of his 15 minutes of fame are burned
up. Since the early 1980s, he's been fascinated by anything that creates
artistic mediums where none were meant to exist; since the 1990s, he
continually attempts to create them. So it was only natural that in the new
millennium, he would try to simultaneously document and hoard them. Such
efforts have lead to involvement in the archival demogroup Hornet; founding
MobyGames, the world's largest online game database; spearheading the
MindCandy DVD projects with Dan Wright; and creating the colossal waste of
time 8088 Corruption. Jim enjoys playing the game Real Life™ in Illinois,
USA with his wife and two sons.

   Andy Voss (Phoenix)
Andy Voss, using the handle "Phoenix" on computers since childhood, grew
fascinated by demos, and the scene culture they inspired, through the 1990s.
Although his creative skills were limited mostly to tracker music, he
studied demos like an ancient art and helped preserve and recover them for
various projects. Having the unfortunate luck of growing up without an
Amiga, Andy was overjoyed when emulation on PCs became possible in the mid
90s. After releasing his collection of demo MODs on a website called
Demodulate, Andy took on the challenge of rebuilding some of these
four-channel treasures into 5.1 channel surround sound, without changing
them too much and angering Amiga purists. He misses his tracking days,
but is more than satisfied with his graphics design work for the DVD
package and the website you are viewing right now. :)

   Jeremy Williams (Blue 7 Media)
After stumbling upon Dan's seminal demo ftp site in 1992, Jeremy was hooked.
He would become known campus-wide as the guy with the coolest
"screensavers". From 1996-1998 he ran the PC Demo Fan Club web site where
he shared opinions about the scene and introduced newcommers to it. Though
that site has since falling into obscurity, the Demographics featurette on
this DVD is a natural extention of Jeremy's unexplainable need to connect
with regular people about the demo scene, and convince them it's the
coolest thing in the history of the universe.
This time around, Jeremy not only did the featurette (listen to the
commentary, BTW), but the DVD authoring and most of the menu tricks as well.

   Dan Wright (Pallbearer)
Dan Wright first discovered demos around 1986 on his Commodore C-128 (in
C-64 emulation mode of course). During the late 80's he created several
C-64 demos that can be found on his Fusecon web page if you look in the
right place. Dan caught a glimpse of his first "real" PC demo, Fishtro,
during Spring of 1992. That summer he created the "Internet Demo Site"
which later became known as Hornet. A couple years later, he released the
first mixed-mode CD for the demoscene, called "Escape". This was followed
up with a two CD release (audio/data) called "Freedom" (1995) and an audio
CD co-produced with Imphobia called "audiophonik" (1999), containing songs
from scene musicians. In 2002, Dan assisted with the financing, booklet
art, and business aspect of producing the MindCandy Volume 1: PC Demos.
He also has the laborious task of packaging and mailing all the DVD's.
Dan currently lives in Oregon with his wife and son, spending the majority
of his time pestering the wife. With the launch of MC2, Dan is now looking
forward to visiting the post office many times over the next few months.

   -------------------------------------------------------------------------
   ART & MUSIC:
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------
   Antti Jädertpolm (Fthr)
Antti "fthr" Jädertpolm was invited to join the controversial "The Planet
Of Leather Moomins" movement as the 2nd member back in 1995. From there on
he has produced visual material (demographics, experimental screenplays,
cardboard animals) for TPOLM with a unique style that has sometimes been
compared to Leonard Cohen's 1977 album "Death Of A Ladies' Man". Currently
living in a place that can be vaguely described as "Europe", Antti
continues to supply companies, organisations, individuals and DemoDVD
makers with psychosurreal digital collages that are sure to distract
the targetted audience from the real meaning.

   Arto Koivisto (Little Bitchard)
Arto started tracking on Amiga early 1992, but only got seriously involved
with the demoscene a bit over five years later at the end of 1997. To date
he has contributed sounds, music or mixing/production to over 50 demo,
intro and wild releases and released several hundreds of personal entries
both compo and non-compo (for FUN!) under various nicknames with Little
Bitchard being the most well-known out of these. With his daytime job
revolving around electronics maintenance/servicing, Arto also enjoys
   building electronic instruments and gadgets.
